Ocean Beach, Fire Island
Vacation homes here range from small and cozy cottages to stately vacation homes on the Fire Island's magnificent beaches.
Ocean Beach is Fire Island’s largest year-round community. The Incorporated Village of Ocean Beach was formed in 1921.
Like many other communities O.B. maintains a volunteer fire department; theirs is the largest and best equipped on the island and provides protection to a number of neighboring towns. Two long-established churches, the interdenominational Protestant Union Free Church and the Catholic Our Lady of the Magnificat, serve as spiritual centers for much of the mid-island population; the spire of the latter is visible from miles around the bay and is one of the island’s major landmarks.
The municipality of Ocean Beach elects a mayor and four trustees to govern, has its own court system, as well as police, fire, water, sewage, and maintenance departments. Ocean Beach also contains Fire Island’s only school. The first Fire Island school opened in Ocean Beach in 1918.
